Solar Technology Part 1: Solar Dehydrator

We built a solar dehydrator! This low tech solution can dry herbs, fruits, and veggies without any electricity. Drying helps produce last longer for families. Plus, farmers get better prices for value added products (like herb mixes and dried fruit) than selling harvests straight out of the ground.

Our first two tests using the dehydrator were a big success!

Test #1: Drying herbs

Test #2: Drying fruits and veggies (peppers, turmeric, and bananas).

Both the solar dehydrator and oven will be used as model technologies in our permaculture workshops in Guatemala.

Fun fact: These technologies were built with funds raised from a birthday fundraiser. Birthdays are an easy way to raise money for a good cause. We'd love to collaborate for yours! Don't hesitate to reach out.

CIELO x CEPC Tolimán Re:Earth Grant Report 2024

In 2024, the Re:Earth grant supported CEPC Tolimán’s transformation—connecting the center to electricity for the first time, deepening native permaculture with cacao and melipona bees, and hiring its first full-time Maya team member. Over 70 participants joined workshops that strengthened food sovereignty and ancestral ecological knowledge in Quixayá, Guatemala.
